The informality of accommodation establishments represents one of the main challenges to sustainable tourism
development in emerging destinations, affecting service quality, competitiveness, and tourism planning. This study
aimed to analyze the challenges and benefits of formalizing informal accommodation establishments in the Costa
das Falésias Tourist Region, Paraíba, considering their contribution to socioeconomic development and sustainable
tourism. An exploratory and descriptive approach was adopted using qualitative and quantitative methods,
including questionnaires administered to accommodation owners and managers, as well as the mapping of 424
establishments through Artificial Intelligence and Power BI tools. The results reveal that only a small proportion
of the accommodation establishments are formally registered, with bureaucracy, compliance costs, lack of
information, and the need to adopt more sustainable practices identified as the main barriers to formalization. On
the other hand, formalization increases access to public policies, professional training, credit opportunities, and
greater integration into tourism planning. The study concludes that formalization is a strategic element for
strengthening competitiveness, improving service quality, and promoting the sustainable development of regional
tourism, requiring public policies that foster productive inclusion, simplify formalization procedures, and support
small entrepreneurs.
