This article aims to discuss the main theoretical contributions to the study of lifestyle entrepreneurship (LE), reflecting on its manifestations and specific characteristics in the context of gastronomy. In LE, entrepreneurial motivation transcends the pursuit of economic returns or career advancement and is associated with self-actualization, satisfaction with the activity itself, and the pursuit of balance between the personal and professional dimensions of life. Managing such ventures often involves managerial and bureaucratic demands that may not align with entrepreneurs’ skills, interests, or motivations, potentially compromising both business performance and the work–life balance that originally motivated the decision to pursue entrepreneurship. This article provides an in-depth theoretical analysis, investigates the dimensions and characteristics of LE in the context of gastronomy, and highlights the difficulties arising from the application of traditional management perspectives to these entrepreneurs, resulting in them being labeled as non-entrepreneurs. The literature on LE still lacks a consolidated theoretical and conceptual foundation. Existing studies remain sparse and fragmented, creating opportunities for further research to systematize knowledge about the phenomenon and its manifestations across different fields. This article suggests comparative studies of LE in gastronomy, tourism, the arts, sports, and other fields to identify behavioral similarities and convergences among lifestyle entrepreneurs, thereby contributing to the development of a more robust and consolidated body of literature. Another limitation identified is the lack of technical and managerial skills, reinforcing the need for public policies aimed at training and capacity-building in business management, in order to reconcile entrepreneurs’ intentions with economic viability and regional development. Overall, lifestyle entrepreneurship can contribute to strengthening local communities, preserving cultural heritage, and promoting sustainability.
