Abstract

The theological influence of Augustine (354-430) on university masters of the 13th century is certainly greater than that of any other Christian thinker. Among the many masters established in Paris, there was Bonaventure (c. 1217-1274), who obtained his licentia docendi after a long education, earning in 1250 the title of “sententiary bachelor” for commenting the Sentences of Peter Lombard (12th century). When seeking the question of dreams in Bonaventure, it was precisely in his Commentary on the Sentences that we found it. Aware that Bonaventure had read De spiritu et anima believing it to be a work by Augustine, and there being relevant chapters about dreams, we decided to compare it to the Commentary, assuming an influence with Augustinian traits, which seemed to be confirmed when analyzing the Confessions, for the moral problem of dreams (e.g. consensio, consuetudo, peccatum), and the On the Literal Interpretation of Genesis, for the epistemology of dreams (e.g. memoria, imaginatio, intentio). Known for the influence that the Augustinian notions, such as exemplarity or divine illumination, had on his thought, Bonaventure now leads us to consider his inspiration in Augustine to develop his own reflection on dreams, also very marked by the authority of Aristotle.
