Abstract

Divine ideas became the subject of discussion in Patristics and gained increasingly elaborate models in Scholasticism. This article presents the main characteristics of this doctrine in two exponents of the Franciscan School, Bonaventure and Duns Scotus, and analyzes the influence of Bonaventure's model on that of Scotus. Bonaventure placed the theme at the center of his metaphysics and epistemology, considering divine ideas as the divine truth itself that expresses the knowable and grants creatures their ontological and intelligible foundation. In Duns Scotus, a radical revision of the tradition is made under his careful logical examination. He criticizes Bonaventure's model and rejects what he considers to be a logical contradiction: the necessity of relations of imitability for the knowledge of creatures. However, he accepts the broader scope of divine ideas of the model of the ‘ancient doctor’, contradicting the trends of his time.
