Abstract

We can be sure that from 1844 Kierkegaard's pseudonyms will abandon two typically modern assumptions. Both pseudonyms will attempt to develop an understanding of the subject that leaves behind both the notion of a self-transparent subjectivity and ethical intellectualism. One of the slogans of Modernity is that every individual can access a degree of personal development that empowers him for an organization of his existence in which interests, needs and personal and social commitments find an integration. However, this possibility rests on the assumption that the subject is fully aware of that over which he exercises his capacity of determination. The psychology of Kierkegaardian pseudonyms proposes to assume the opposite assumption. Axel Honneth argues that two movements in the twentieth century led to the crisis of the classical concept of the subject. The first is the critique of the subjectivity of Freud's psychology, with which he proved that the subject cannot be transparent to himself; the second is that produced by the late analyses of Wittgenstein and Saussure, who make a critique of the subject in terms of the philosophy of language, thus denying the idea of autonomy in terms of the subject's authorship. In this sense, Kierkegaard's contribution to contemporary thought is forceful. For, the theory of limited subjectivity accounts a century earlier for this impossibility of unity of the self, and as soon as this is "expressed" in words, it loses its true quality of sensuality and all too easily "disappears" into some other abstract form.
