Abstract

At Topics 137b3-13, Aristotle establishes two different points of view by which it is possible to distinguish the predicates of the Platonic intelligible Ideas. On the basis of this distinction, some scholars have developed important analyses of the so-called Theory of Ideas presented in Plato's dialogues (CHERNISS, 1944; OWEN, 1968; KEYT, 1969 and 1971; VLASTOS, 1972 and 1973). After presenting a short overview of these analyses, this paper will defend that the Aristotelian distinction, as drawn in the Topics, is useful to think the Platonic ontology, and, on the other hand, is incompatible with the way Plato understood his Ideas. Further, this paper will propose a new version of the distinction of predicates of the Ideas, inspired by the Aristotelian one. Finally, it will show that the new distinction is not only compatible with the dialogues, but is also useful to think about Platonic ontology, especially its notion of “participation”.
