PHONOLOGICAL STUDY OF DELETIONS OF /S/ AND /R/, IN CODA, IN YOUTH AND ADULT EDUCATION

Abstract

This work aims to analyze, in the light of Syllable Theory, the phonological processes of deletion of /R/ and /S/, in syllabic coda position, in nominal and verbal forms, which are present in the writing of students from Stage I A and I B of Youth and Adult Education (EJA) in a public school located in Piripiri - PI. This research is characterized as quali-quantitative, based on a metric phonological approach. For this investigation, we used the support of studies by Cagliari (2002); Chamber Jr. (1992); Bisol (2014), who bring important contributions about the phonological processes and contexts of materialization in the phonetic chain. The corpus of this investigation consists of 112 textual productions, collected from April to June 2022. We hypothesize that the deletions of /R/ and /S/ occur mostly in spontaneous productions. The results indicate a higher incidence of deletion of /R/ in syllabic external coda in verbs and followed by pauses. In the inner coda, the presence of back vowels was triggered. The deletion of /S/ in the internal coda occurred before the stop consonants /t/, /k/ and /g/, in the stressed or preceding syllable, while in the external coda it occurs mainly without the plural morpheme.
