THE EFFECTS OF SPEECH ACTS IN ARMANDINHO'S STRIPS

Abstract

The article carried out the study of the meanings present in the lines of the Armandinho strip, in the light of the theory of speech acts. As well as, it analyzed the meaning constructions of the strips in relation to their contextual elements and the illocutionary force of the characters' utterances. Thus, the analyzed strips seek to create certain effects on the reader, such as social criticism. Although there are acts with illocutionary force in the strips of declaring, ordering or advising, but perlocutionary effects of persuading about the social relations at play in the strips. Furthermore, it should be noted that the construction of the effects of meaning in the comic strips also depends on extralinguistic elements, such as the reader's knowledge of the topic at hand in Armandinho's scenes. Therefore, irony is one of the main elements used to generate certain meanings in the analyzed strips, in which the illocutionary force of declaring, ordering or advising has perlocutionary effects, focusing on the meanings to be awakened in the reader.
